Temporary Anchorage Device (TAD)
Temporary anchorage devices, or TADs, are small titanium anchors used in certain orthodontic cases to achieve faster, more precise tooth movement. TADs may be used alongside braces or as an alternative to traditional headgear.
How are TADs placed?
Before placement, a strong anesthetic numbs the surrounding gum tissue and jawbone. Your doctor then gently guides the TAD through the gum and into the bone — the process is quick and you may barely notice when it’s done. You might feel slight pressure during placement, but within a day the TAD will no longer be noticeable. Once your treatment goals are met, removing the TAD is a quick, comfortable procedure that takes only a few minutes.
What can I do to relieve discomfort from my TAD?
If you experience any soreness after placement, Tylenol® is recommended for relief. If discomfort continues after a few days, contact our office as soon as possible.
How do I keep my TAD clean?
Clean your TAD the same way you clean your braces: by brushing thoroughly at least three times a day. When your TAD is placed, we’ll also provide an antimicrobial mouthwash to use twice daily.
