With braces, it’s essential to brush and floss after every meal to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment. Not sure which products are best for your appliance? Just ask — we’re happy to point you in the right direction.
Brushing with Braces
After every meal, brush for two minutes using a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. An electric toothbrush works well too. Position the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line and use small, gentle circular motions on the outer and inner tooth surfaces. Use short back-and-forth strokes on chewing surfaces and the insides of your front teeth. Pay special attention to the areas around your brackets and other appliances.

Flossing with Braces
Flossing after meals keeps your braces clean and helps your treatment stay on schedule. Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to thread behind each wire. Wrap the ends around your pointer fingers with a few inches of taut floss between them. Gently slide the floss between teeth using a back-and-forth motion, then clean beneath the gum line to remove plaque and food. Work through all your teeth until each space has been flossed. If flossing isn’t doing the full job, ask us about a water flosser!

Extra Tips for a Healthy Smile with Braces
- Use fluoride toothpaste: It strengthens enamel and helps guard against cavities.
- Avoid sticky and sugary foods: They increase plaque buildup and make cleaning more difficult.
- Rinse with mouthwash: An alcohol-free fluoride rinse washes away bacteria and helps protect enamel.
- Keep up with regular dental cleanings: Continue seeing your dentist for professional cleanings in addition to your orthodontic visits.
